A guide to lasting beauty
Silk is strong for its weight, yet its surface deserves gentle handling. A few simple habits will help preserve your scarf’s colour, lustre, shape and finished edges.
Wear thoughtfully
Put your scarf on after perfume, hairspray, lotion and cosmetics have dried.
Avoid friction
Keep silk away from rough jewellery, hook-and-loop fasteners, sharp bag hardware and textured surfaces.
Keep it dry
Protect it from rain and splashes. Blot accidental moisture gently; never rub the fabric.
Rest after wear
Untie the scarf and allow it to air naturally before returning it to storage.
Cleaning
Choose the method specified for the piece
For a scarf labelled dry-clean only, use a reputable professional cleaner experienced with silk and point out any stains, delicate edges or embellishments. Tell the cleaner what caused a stain when known.
Hand wash only when the product label expressly permits it. Use clean cool water and a small amount of pH-neutral detergent intended for silk. Wash the scarf alone, handle it briefly and gently, and rinse thoroughly at the same cool temperature.
- Do not soak, scrub, twist or wring.
- Do not use bleach, biological detergent, fabric softener or stain-removal pens.
- Do not machine wash or tumble dry unless the individual care label specifically allows it.
Spills & stains
Act gently—never aggressively
Blot excess liquid immediately with a clean, white, absorbent cloth. Work without rubbing, spreading the mark or applying concentrated household products. Water itself can leave a ring on some silk finishes, so avoid local spot-cleaning unless the product instructions recommend it.
For oil, makeup, wine, ink or an unknown stain, stop experimenting and consult a silk-experienced professional cleaner. Heat can set a stain, so do not iron or steam the affected area first.
Drying
Let silk dry naturally
If washing is permitted, place the scarf flat between clean towels and press gently to absorb water without twisting. Reshape it carefully, then lay it flat on a dry towel away from radiators, hairdryers and direct sunlight. Do not hang a saturated scarf, as the weight of the water may distort it.
Pressing & steaming
Use the lowest effective heat
Check the care label first. Where ironing is allowed, work on the reverse while the silk is slightly damp, select the iron’s silk or lowest-temperature setting, and place a clean cotton pressing cloth between the iron and scarf. Test an inconspicuous corner before continuing.
Keep the iron moving and avoid pressing hand-rolled hems flat. A steamer may create water spots or affect certain finishes; use it only when permitted, keep it at a safe distance and never allow hot droplets to land on the silk.
Storage
Clean, untied and protected
Store your scarf only when it is completely dry and free from perfume or food residue. Fold it loosely with clean, acid-free tissue inside a breathable box or drawer, away from direct light, humidity and heat. Alternatively, use a smooth padded hanger designed for scarves.
Avoid plastic bags for long-term storage and do not place heavy objects on top. Refold the scarf along different lines occasionally to prevent one crease from becoming established. If using moth protection, keep the product from touching the silk directly.
Travel
Pack with room to breathe
Fold or softly roll the scarf with acid-free tissue and place it inside a clean fabric pouch or protective box. Keep it away from shoes, toiletries, jewellery and items with exposed zips. On arrival, unpack it promptly and allow light creases to relax naturally before considering gentle pressing.
